Justin has been wanting me to go to a storage unit auction since he bought his very first one. I remember hearing the glee in his voice as he bought it. Or the second (or third?) when he called me for help researching a camera he won at an auction. I had visions of us being the cooler version of Ton and Allen (you would only get this if you watch Auction Hunters). We would have our own super secret squirrel code that was not obvious to, well, everyone.
I just moved to town this past weekend and have the sum total of pots and pans, an air mattress, camp chairs, clothes, and my two sidekicks - Luna and Missy. Justin suggested that we go to a storage auction to furnish my apartment. Why not? I mean...I don't want to spend a bunch of money and what better way to get a whole house of furniture pronto? I was game.

It was not really like television. Not at all. I don't think I even had a game face on. It was more like a dumbfounded and confused face. I don't think it impressed anyone.
Storage Unit Auction: 7 units
1st Unit - What we saw: Leather chaise lounge, curio cabinet, bow flex, MRE(s), skateboard decks, dining set, boxes. We both agreed that we would go $200-250. Opening bid $200. Went for $600. What just happened here?
2nd Unit- What we saw: cast iron "cauldron", butter crock, old stadium seats, shotgun shells, some kind of fur poking out of a box, some furniture (I think). You could tell this unit had a lot of old/antique stuff in it. Opening bid: don't even remember. Went for:$1000. Neither of us had even brought that much money
3rd Unit- What we saw: An entire set of 1970-80's purple/flower/velvet furniture. Not cool looking at all. There was a complete set though! And toilet paper. As Justin suggested, "It's because people are going to (word that rhymes with hit) when they see what you bought." We made jokes. Lots of them. Opening bid : $100 (I am really look perplexed at this point. I mean...really?) Went for: $350. I doubt it cost that much new.4th, 5th, 6th units were all junk. Not worth mentioning junk but still managed to go for upwards of $150ea.
7th unit- aka "cheerleader unit" because it had a megaphone. There was also files from 1990, an old computer monitor, old ugly chairs. Opening bid: I don't even care by this point because it was like upwards of $200. Went for $750.
It was all over in a flash and left me just confused. Justin says it's because I was new and they were all just trying to show me how much money they had. By all means...buy that bed bug infested mattress unit for $750. We are going to try again next week. Let's see how that one goes.
